There’s no place quite like the Monterey Peninsula. The views are stunning, the roads are legendary—and the coastal air can be surprisingly harsh on classic cars.

Between salt-laced breezes, sudden fog, and temperature swings, Monterey’s microclimate presents unique challenges for collectors bringing their vehicles to Car Week. Whether you're arriving for Pebble Beach, The Quail, or Laguna Seca, here’s how to make sure your car arrives and stays in peak condition.
1. Fog Isn’t Just Moisture — It’s Salt
Monterey’s famous morning fog isn’t just a photography filter—it carries microscopic salt particles that can cling to chrome, paint, and undercarriages.
Prep tip: Apply a fresh coat of wax or ceramic coating before transport to create a barrier. After arrival, gently wipe the car down each morning before sun exposure to prevent fog from drying on the surface.
2. Coastal Air Accelerates Corrosion
Even parked vehicles can show signs of surface corrosion after a few days in open air, especially on untreated bolts, engine bay components, and suspension parts.
Storage solution: Keep vehicles in a covered or enclosed garage whenever possible. If parking outdoors, use a breathable, weather-rated cover—not a standard tarp that traps moisture.
3. Watch for Windborne Grit
Ocean breezes sometimes carry fine sand or dust, especially in drier pockets of the week. This can leave a film on paint and glass that, if wiped dry, creates micro-scratches.
Pro tip: Use a detailing spray or lubricant and microfiber cloth for daily cleaning—never dry-wipe a classic car exposed to open air.
4. Temperature Swings Affect Tire Pressure and Seals
Monterey mornings may start in the 50s, while afternoons can hit the 80s. These shifts impact tire pressure, rubber seals, and fuel vapor systems, especially in older or carbureted vehicles.
Check daily:
Tire PSI
Fluid levels
Hoses for minor leaks
Battery health (especially in rarely driven cars)
5. Where You Park Can Make or Break Your Week
A lot can happen in a short time—sun exposure, bird droppings, unexpected moisture. Choosing the right storage location is as important as prepping the vehicle itself.
At Fiori + Mare, we’ve hosted vehicles from around the world and provide:
A secure 1300 sq. ft. detached garage
Paved outdoor space for easy prep
Gated access with on-site owners
Space to cover, wipe down, and detail vehicles with peace and quiet
Monterey Is Beautiful—But Demands Respect
If you're showing, selling, or simply enjoying your vehicle during Car Week, don’t let the coastal climate catch you off guard. A little prep now protects your investment for years to come.
